Tullahoma Airport Runway Upgrade

The Tullahoma Regional Airport, also known as William Northern Field, is a general aviation facility on approximately 594 acres. To accommodate larger corporate aircraft, the Tullahoma Airport Authority (TAA) desired to repair and upgrade a concrete runway.  S&ME provided geotechnical consultation to the TAA on potential construction approaches. Our team also conducted multiple geotechnical explorations and testing for design phase purposes. Finally, S&ME provided construction quality assurance testing and monitoring during the construction phase.

Highlights

  • Geotechnical explorations determined structural runway characteristics and in-situ soil strength data
  • The project used the crack and seat method during construction i.e. making use of the runway’s old concrete for subgrade support of new pavements
