Governor’s Drive Phase I

The purpose of this project was to widen a substandard five-lane roadway to a seven-lane roadway to increase roadway capacity through the downtown Huntsville area. This project included an at grade railroad crossing, full utility relocation, right-of-way acquisition, and construction administration where the team assisted the City of Huntsville in communications and coordination with Huntsville Utilities, UAB Medical Clinic, Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville-Madison County Railroad Authority, ALDOT, TVA and various land owners. In addition to providing the roadway design, the team provided RPR, Progress Meeting Documentation, and Construction Administration. The project length was three quarters of a mile and included the grade, drain, base, signage, lighting and signalization improvements. All design and Construction Requirements were in accordance with the Alabama Department of Transportation requirements.

Highlights:

  • Road involves a major east/west corridor
  • Work involved significant drainage improvements and replacement of a pedestrian bridge
  • The wider lanes, underground utilities, new street lights and traffic signal poles help make the finished product more attractive
