Florence Battery Recycling Center
The $150 million automotive battery recycling center opened in 2012. The 500,000 square-foot building was the first of its kind. S&ME provided geotechnical designs to limit the differential settlement due to highly variable soil conditions and structural loads. Our team provided innovative engineering solutions that included staged soil surcharging to induce pre-consolidation. The result allowed the use of economical shallow footings to support most of the building and equipment. S&ME also identified the best on-site borrow sources for minimal land disturbance and to provide detailed infiltration data for the design of sustainable water management systems. These innovative techniques resulted in an expedited construction schedule.
