USS Yorktown Environmental Remediation
The USS Yorktown, an iconic Essex-class aircraft carrier now serving as a museum at Patriots Point in Charleston Harbor, faced a critical environmental challenge. Over decades, the vessel accumulated millions of gallons of hazardous materials and tons of asbestos left behind during its decommissioning. Corrosion of the hull threatened to release these contaminants into the harbor, posing a serious risk to marine ecosystems, shipping routes, and the local economy.
S&ME’s environmental team in Charleston, with Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Services specialists, has been a key contributor to the remediation project since the early 1990s.
Our comprehensive testing included water and fluid sampling for PFAS and heavy metals, surface wipe sampling for PCBs, and lead air sampling. We also provided asbestos services, covering ACM assessment, abatement project design, and air monitoring. To address unique site conditions, we collaborated with SCDES to secure approval for alternative work practices in the abatement design.
Through a multi-phase effort funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, our team supported the project that ultimately successfully removed more than 1.4 million gallons of contaminated fluids and heavy fuel oil, along with over nine tons of asbestos-containing materials. These actions prevented environmental impact, safeguarded public health, and preserved a historic landmark for future generations.
