Volkswagen Expansion

S&ME provided geotechnical engineering and special inspections for 800,000 square feet of additions to the Volkswagen Manufacturing Plant at Enterprise South in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  The project included additions to the Body Shop, Assembly Area, Technical Center, and Warehouse as well as new pavement areas.  Foundations for the additions bear on a combination of aggregate piers and over blasted bed rock.  Each addition was treated as a separate project and constructed with overlapping schedules.  S&ME was able to utilize the same team of Special Inspectors to cover all of the project.  Additionally, due to S&ME’s involvement in the original site preparation work, we were able to assist the Owner and Contractor with knowledge of previously installed aggregate piers and bed rock conditions relative to the planned construction.  Both of these issues were a cost benefit to the Client.

S&ME provided Special Inspections for soil improvements, foundations, and structural steel. Testing services were provided for concrete; including testing for plastic properties during placement, compressive strength, floor flatness, Ground Penetrating Radar, and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity.
