Two S&ME Technical Principals Present at A&WMA

Ashley Sapyta, PE and Mike Marcus, Ph. D. convened panel discussions on timely topics of risk and sustainability at the 2017 Air & Waste Management Association Conference and Exhibition in Pittsburgh. The Annual Conference held June 5-8 focused on bridging environment, energy and health in the city with more bridges than anywhere else in the country.

organized two programs, working with her co-chair Mike Marcus, Ph.D.

Air Pollution and Human Health: Response to Public Complaint. Panelists included a physician/toxicologist, attorney, human health risk assessor, and former regulator who discussed the complexities of evaluating real vs. perceived impacts of a fictional manufacturing facility on the health of nearby residents.

Sustainability Goals, Metrics and the Triple Bottom Line. The panelists, who represented a mix of industry, provided insight into their enterprises’ points of view on sustainability and responded to questions concerning their social, environmental and economic goals.

Risk Assessment, Risk Management and Risk Communication: Roles, Responsibilities and Alignment. Dr. Marcus hosted and joined panelists from academia and a former regulator in discussion of the three components of the risk cascade in environmental projects. Special emphasis focused on the interfaces in transfer of project execution among the components.
