Central Piedmont Community College Kratt Building Asbestos Inspection/Abatement Design Plans
Asbestos Inspection
The purpose of the assessment was to identify asbestos containing materials (ACM) prior to the demolition of the Kratt Building located at 1320 Sam Ryburn Walk on the Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) Main Campus in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Our services were performed on July 18, July 19, and August 26 of 2016. The structure is an approximately 50,000 sq. ft. classroom building believed to have been built in 1968. The exterior of the structure is built of precast concrete panels and the interior walls of concrete masonry units and/or drywall. It has three stories and a basement, is slab on grade, and has a built up roof.
S&ME assessed the entire building, including the roof, for suspect ACMs, including thermal system insulation (TSI), surfacing materials, and miscellaneous materials. Representative samples of asbestos-suspect building materials were collected in accordance with the EPA’s AHERA protocol and applicable state regulations.
Asbestos Abatement Design and Oversight
S&ME prepared asbestos abatement plans and specifications for the removal of asbestos containing materials (ACM) from the Kratt building in October 2016.
Asbestos Abatement Commenced in March of 2017. S&ME reviewed submittals, is overseeing the operations of the contractor to verify compliance, is conducting asbestos abatement monitoring and clearance inspections and testing, and will prepare a final report upon completion of the asbestos abatement.
