Continental Tire Production Facility

The project involves construction of approximately 4,500,000 square feet of process and manufacturing facilities.  The scope also includes shipping and warehouse/distribution, utilities, parking, and access road. Several production areas required excavation of permanent machine or process pits approximately 20 to 30 feet deep.

S&ME provided a geotechnical exploration consisting of soil test borings, cone penetration and dilatometer test soundings, backhoe test pits, and shear wave velocity measurements.  Highly plastic subgrades requiring lime modification for construction during winter months proved quite a challenge. Other site challenges include shallow ground water, and highly compressible soils within 25 feet of the ground surface. Drilled displacement piles were recommended for support of all production facilities.

S&ME also provided CMT services during construction of the building pads, which were provided to the owner as part of the incentives package. Grading involved an area measuring approximately 330 acres overall and approximately 2,000,000 cubic yards of material.
