Lee County Main Library

Project Background

In May 2026, Lee County unveiled its new main library in Sanford, NC, an exciting addition that serves as a hub for learning, creativity, and community connection.

Located adjacent to O.T. Sloan Park, the approximately 34,000-square-foot facility replaces an aging library and provides expanded space for programs, resources, and engagement. Designed to support a growing population, the modern library features dedicated areas for children and teens, makerspaces, meeting rooms, and flexible indoor and outdoor gathering spaces.

S&ME Services

S&ME provided geotechnical engineering services for the project, including preparation of a geotechnical exploration report to support the design and construction of the new facility. Our work involved subsurface exploration and evaluation to develop recommendations for site grading, foundation design, and anticipated settlement performance.

Understanding subsurface conditions is critical to the success of any structure. Our evaluation identified topsoil and cultivated soils associated with the site’s previous agricultural use, underlain by residual soils consisting primarily of clays and silts, with partially weathered rock encountered at depths beyond anticipated site grading requirements.

By identifying these conditions early, S&ME helped the project team make informed decisions about foundation design and site preparation, reducing uncertainty during construction and minimizing the risk of unforeseen conditions that could impact cost or schedule

Impact

By expanding access to technology, programming, and gathering spaces, the new Lee County Main Library creates a welcoming destination for residents of all ages, strengthening education, civic engagement, and community connection across the region. Its location near Lee County High School and Central Carolina Community College further enhances access to educational resources for students, educators, and lifelong learners.
