Project Background
S&ME provided geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing (CMT) services for the Crooked Hammock Brewery project in Raleigh, North Carolina. Our work supported construction of a new restaurant and brewery, including patio areas, retaining walls, pavements, and associated site improvements through subsurface evaluation, engineering recommendations, field observations, and laboratory testing.
S&ME Services
S&ME supported the project from design through construction with geotechnical engineering, field observations, and laboratory testing services.
Our geotechnical team performed subsurface exploration and developed recommendations for foundations, slabs, pavements, and retaining walls. During construction, our CMT team provided field testing and observation services to evaluate bearing conditions, monitor soil compaction, and structural steel observations. Laboratory testing supported evaluation of soils, concrete, and masonry materials throughout the project.
Challenges
- Retaining wall construction required coordination with an existing slope and limited space along the property line.
- Fine-grained near-surface soils were sensitive to moisture and construction disturbance, requiring proactive management of exposed subgrades.
- The compact site required coordination of building construction, utilities, pavements, and retaining structures.
- Variable soil conditions during backfill and utility installation required ongoing field evaluation and coordination with the contractor.
- Phased construction across the site required responsive scheduling and timely reporting to align with contractor sequencing.
Technical Approach
S&ME applied a practical, data-driven approach that connected design-phase recommendations with real-time construction observations. Subsurface exploration confirmed that native soils could support shallow foundations, helping streamline the design.
During construction, field evaluations and laboratory testing provided guidance on soil moisture, subgrade stability, and material placement. Our team performed observations and testing to assess bearing conditions, monitor compaction, and support installation of foundations, pavements, utilities, and retaining walls.
By maintaining consistent communication and adapting to field conditions as work progressed, S&ME helped reduce uncertainty and support steady construction.
Results and Impact
Crooked Hammock Brewery’s Raleigh location brings the brand’s laid-back, coastal-inspired atmosphere to the Triangle, creating a destination that blends craft brewing, dining, and outdoor recreation. The site features a thoughtfully designed mix of indoor and outdoor spaces, including a full-service restaurant and bar, expansive patio areas, and recreation zones that encourage gathering and community engagement.
Through this collaborative approach, S&ME helped bring Crooked Hammock Brewery’s Raleigh vision to life, delivering a space that reflects the brand’s unique character while providing an environment for the community to enjoy.
