S&ME Wins North Alabama’s ABC Award of Excellence with Airport Project

On December 6th, 2018, S&ME was on hand at the 15th Annual ABC North Alabama’s Excellence in Construction Awards in Huntsville, Alabama, to accept an Award of Excellence and the Engineering Project of the Year award. S&ME, along with representatives from our client, Wiregrass Construction Company (WCC), accepted the award for the Huntsville International Airport Group VI Phase 4B Taxiway Expansion project.
As the Tennessee Valley area has grown and developed, Huntsville has adapted to support the region. The Huntsville Madison County Airport Authority (HMCAA) has developed a multiphase plan to upgrade airfield pavements and lighting systems. The upgrades include the promotion of the Air Design Group (ADG) to Group VI, enabling the airport to accommodate larger aircraft. Phase 4B is the second phase of the project.
Contracted by WCC, S&ME was tasked with providing quality control (QC) for both construction materials testing and environmental services, including NPDES construction permitting, preparation of the Construction Best Management Practices Plan, performance of sediment and erosion control inspections, and construction layout surveying on the taxiway expansion project. The S&ME team was led by Jeff Pepper, PE. The project began in March of 2017 and was completed one year later. During the first nine months of the project, S&ME personnel were present on site full-time.

ABC’s Excellence in Construction program has become a premier competition within the construction industry that recognizes outstanding construction projects across the nation. Consistently the number one construction competition in the nation, EIC uniquely acknowledges the entire project team – the contractor, the designer and owner. The award submittal encompasses scope, narrative, multiple photographs, safety, reference letters, and supplemental materials. A panel of judges score each entry on a 100-point scale, and the top earners in each category are the winners.
