NCDOT Inventory and Analysis, TIP R-5710/R-5721/U-5765

S&ME provided cultural resources services under our on-call Historic Architecture and Landscape contract with NCDOT. S&ME was involved with this project during two phases: the initial identification of structures within the project area and Area of Potential Effects (APE) and the architectural analysis of structures needing additional work.

August through September 2016, S&ME completed a historic building inventory (reconnaissance level architectural survey) for approximately nine miles of proposed improvements along NC 73 in Lincoln and Mecklenburg counties. We identified and surveyed 80 structures that were greater than 50 years old. We presented the results in a PowerPoint that evaluated the integrity of the structures and made recommendations for additional work based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria.

March through June 2017, S&ME performed additional work on the R-5710/R-5721/U-5765 project. Of the approximately 80 structures identified during the initial building survey, 13 needed additional work to meet NRHP eligibility. For this phase of the project, we performed background research, survey and documentation of historic structures, development of historic and architectural contexts, evaluation of integrity, and NRHP eligibility recommendations. S&ME completed photo documentation of the 13 historic structures within the APE for this project, completed research of the history and architecture of the structures, and recommended six structures as eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.  S&ME completed North Carolina state structure survey forms and created Geographic Information System (GIS) data for the project APE and surveyed structures. We also submitted digital photographs, named according to state standards, with the project deliverables.
