PNG Wilmington 150 Pipeline

On behalf of Piedmont Natural Gas Company, Inc. (PNG), S&ME completed a Phase I archaeological survey of approximately 5.5 miles along the proposed PNG Wilmington 150 Pipeline corridor.  S&ME also investigated several small re-routed portions of the pipeline, totaling approximately 520 m. The surveyed portion is part of a 6.7-mile corridor that extends across the Cape Fear River into New Hanover County. The pipeline originates near the U.S. Army Railroad tracks in Brunswick County and terminates just east of River Road in New Hanover County, North Carolina.

S&ME investigated a total of seven sites. The team recommended one site as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and two additional sites as potentially eligible. In addition, the survey uncovered possible remains of a late nineteenth to mid twentieth century community near Moore’s Chapel/Mt. Zion AME Church.  However, the team did not evaluate the site for NRHP eligibility as it extended well beyond the project corridor onto private property. The remaining two sites were recommended ineligible for the NRHP.
