MAJOR AIRPORT EXPANSION
An Engineering Excellence Award-Winning Project
CLIENT: Hartsfield-Jackson Construction Management
OWNER: City of Atlanta
PROJECT LOCATION: Atlanta, Georgia
S&ME has been retained to perform quality assurance testing of construction materials for the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Our services include field and laboratory testing of soil, aggregate, asphalt, concrete and masonry. Testing procedures are in accordance with specified industry standards such as ASTM, AASHTO and Georgia DOT. Additionally, our work includes operation of an on-site laboratory for testing soil, aggregate, asphalt and concrete. The lab is accredited through AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL) and the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL).
Runway 10/28 (Fifth Runway)
In order to meet the increased demand for air travel and reduce current delays,
the need to build the new 9,000 foot Fifth Runway (Runway 10/28) became paramount
that construction be completed as soon as practical. The runway is scheduled
to be commissioned in May 2006.
Site Preparation: This project will provide for the supply and placement of embankment for the entire Runway/Taxiway system. Construction of the embankment will require a total of 18.5 million cubic yards of earth. In addition, in some places the embankment will be filled in to a height of 110 feet. Additional work will also include the removal of existing pavement, fencing and demolition of foundations, as well as the construction of underground utilities, storm drainage collection systems, grassing/seeding and erosion and environmental controls.
Riverdale Road/West Fayetteville Road Relocations: Riverdale Road and West Fayetteville Road ran directly through the development and footprint of the new Fifth Runway. To accommodate the development of the runway, Riverdale Road has been relocated around the footprint of the western threshold of the runway and safety area. West Fayetteville Road was also terminated at its intersection with relocated Riverdale Road where it crosses I-285.
Sullivan Road Relocation: Existing Sullivan Road crosses the footprint of Runway 10/28 and its taxiway system. Sullivan Road has been rerouted from a point south of I-285 and parallel to the runway to intersect with Riverdale Road at Phoenix Boulevard.
I-285 Bridge Structures: The new Fifth Runway will be one of the most complex structures of its kind in the world. This is the first design/build project of this size and complexity in the State of Georgia, as well as the first tunnel in the State of Georgia as defined by NFPA 502 and the first runway bridge of this span length in the world. The new runway will span across an interstate highway accommodating up to 18 lanes (12 mainline, 6 in collector distributor roads). The construction of these structures requires the maintenance of traffic along I-285 and will provide for additional frontage roads and lane expansion capabilities in the future.
