S&ME VP is PENC’s Volunteer of the Year

S&ME Vice President Dane Horna, PE, has been named the 2010 Volunteer of the Year by the Professional Engineers of North Carolina (PENC).

Horna, an environmental engineer and senior consultant in the Charlotte branch, received the honor in June at the PENC Professional Development Conference at Wrightsville Beach, NC.  The award came in honor of his work as engineer mentor for the national champions in the National Future City Competition, an annual event held in Washington as part of National Engineers Week.

Horna coached a team of students from Davidson (NC) IB Middle School.  Earlier the school won the NC championship to advance to the finals where it competed against 39 other regional winners from coast to coast.  Horna has mentored the team to three straight state championships.  More information on this intensely competitive event can be found at www.futurecity.org.
