On The Road. Off The Phone.

S&ME has recently introduced a new safety policy prohibiting employees from using cell phones while driving company vehicles.  The policy also prohibits staff from using S&ME-owned cell phones while driving any vehicle, including personal vehicles. We are also encouraging employees and family members to carry over this practice to their personal lives.

From National Safety Council research, we know driving is one of the most dangerous things we do every day.  And the increase in vehicle incidents involving the distractions of cell phone use is growing at an alarming rate. For more information, please visit the NSC website on distracted driving.

We knew many within S&ME would have concerns about this policy, and there will be times when it seems inconvenient or unproductive. We have been long-accustomed to phoning while driving. At first, I found it hard to stop. And now, I find it hard to imagine how such a distraction could justify the risk of causing an accident. No phone call is worth a life.

I encourage you to join us in adopting this vital safety behavior. Together, we will make difference.
