Geotechnical Engineer and Special Inspection agent

2012 ACEC Honors Engineering Excellence Award

S&ME, Inc. is the Geotechnical Engineer and Special Inspection agent for the new Guilford County Detention Center in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. The Detention Center is a 9-story concrete frame structure with precast perimeter wall panels and column and wall foundation loads up to 950 kips and 8 kips per linear foot, respectively. An underground tunnel connects the new Detention Center to an existing jail facility across the street.

During the subsurface exploration, variable and low consistency fill and alluvial soils were encountered to depths ranging from 3 to 12 feet below the existing ground surface. These soils were not suitable for direct support of the proposed building on shallow spread foundations. Excellent spread foundation bearing conditions consisting of medium dense to very dense silty sand and stiff to hard silt residual soils overlying partially weathered rock were typically encountered beneath the fill and alluvial soils.

S&ME recommended support of the building on shallow spread foundations (designed for 6,000 psf) bearing on remediated materials. Options for remediation included Compacted Aggregate Piers or undercut and replacement with select granular fill. Foundation soils were remediated by mass undercutting the existing fill and alluvial soils within the building footprint and replacing with ABC gradation granular fill. This option was selected due to the tunnel construction already requiring removal of a large quantity of unsuitable materials.

S&ME is currently (2012) performing Special Inspections and construction materials testing services for the project. These services include observations and testing for site utilities, grading, concrete, masonry, pre-cast concrete elements, structural steel welds and bolted connections, and sprayed fire-resistant materials. Concrete construction utilized an on-site batch plant.

The selection process to perform Special Inspections and construction materials testing services consisted of Statement of Qualification submittals followed by interviews of the five short-listed firms. The project was exempted from Mini-Brooks requirements and Lump Sum Fees were requested from the two highest-ranked firms. S&ME was the highest-ranked firm at each step of the selection process and had the lowest Lump Sum cost.

S&ME received a 2012 ACEC Honors Award for its involvement in the project. Sandra Woodard with Guilford County Property Management said, “S&ME worked diligently with our architect and contractor, employing outstanding engineering expertise, to develop the unique and innovative approach of designing the eight-story building on spread foundations over an old creek bed. This design saved thousands of dollars as well as weeks of construction.”

An innovative South Carolina cultural resources investigation

A national history group’s Excellence in Consulting award goes to S&ME, Inc. for an innovative South Carolina cultural resources investigation.

An already highly praised S&ME cultural resources project has received further recognition for its outstanding results, according to an announcement this month from the National Council on Public History (NCPH).

S&ME was given the Group Award Winner for Excellence in Consulting for its 2006–2011 research on archaeological and historical sites along the Lake Murray shoreline and the Lower Saluda River, including the Tree House archaeological site, one of the oldest, most important such sites in the Southeast, where S&ME recovered more than 37,000 artifacts ranging from 800 to 13,500 years old. The work shed much light on the history and pre-history of the region and the lives of early inhabitants.

The finds were made in extremely difficult situations, which required an exceptional blending of S&ME engineering and cultural history staffs that took into account proper professional practice with allowances for necessary safety procedures in investigative activity. S&ME’s consultants then prepared for the State a series of interpretive exhibits and brochures that have stimulated interest in the history and prehistory of the Carolina midlands and heightened appreciation of the role that private corporations play in protecting such resources.

The award presentation, at this spring’s NCPH’s annual meeting in Milwaukee, WI., noted the work cultural resources manager William Green, MA RPA; architectural historian, Heather C. Jones; and senior archaeologist Kimberly Nagle, MS; all of the S&ME Columbia office. More than 2,200 historians attended the five-day Milwaukee NCPH conference.

S&ME’s work was performed for the South Carolina Electric and Gas Company and involved extensive consultation efforts with eight organizations representing State, Federal and regional historic preservation, regulatory, and parks, recreation and tourism agencies, as well as the Catawba and Cherokee Indian Tribal Historic Preservation Offices.

Previous awards for this project were an Engineering Excellence Award from the South Carolina Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies, the National Hydropower Association Award for Outstanding Stewards of American Waters, and a Corporate Stewardship Award from the Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation.

Raleigh, NC—S&ME, Inc., has moved up to 84th nationally on Engineering News-Record (ENR) Magazine’s 2012 Top 500 Designs Firms List.

This improves on last year’s ranking of 97th. Part of the firm’s growth can be attributed to the acquisition of the assets of Ohio-based BBCM, Inc. in October 2011. The Top 500 rankings are based on the past year’s gross revenues of those firm’s participating.

The Boeing Company issues the award annually.

S&ME receives silver Boeing Performance Excellence Award

Charleston, SC, –Engineering firm, S&ME, Inc., today announced it has received a 2011 Boeing Performance Excellence Award (BPEA).

The Boeing Company issues the award annually to recognize suppliers and professional service providers who have achieved superior performance. S&ME maintained a Silver composite performance rating for each month of the 12-month performance period from Oct. 1, 2010, to Sept. 30, 2011 for its services during construction of Boeing’s Charleston, South Carolina 787 Dreamliner Campus. S&ME was one of only 407 suppliers world wide to achieve recognition as a Boeing Silver level BPEA.

Vice President Angela Musselwhite, PE, S&ME’s project manager for the Boeing work, thanked both her staff and those from Boeing with whom they worked. “We were most fortunate in forging an outstanding professional relationship with Boeing. Just being a part of this exciting project, and all it means to the Charleston region, has been quite an honor. But receiving recognition like this from an organization like The Boeing Company is a highlight for our firm and all our employees’ careers.”

S&ME services to Boeing during the award period included geotechnical exploration and engineering design, International Building Code (IBC) Special Inspections, construction material testing, and indoor air quality testing for leadership in energy and environmental design( LEED) certification. S&ME’s services for this project were associated with design and construction of Boeing’s 787 final assembly building, site services building, delivery center, welcome center, truck inspection building, HUB employee center expansion and the offsite Interiors Responsibility Center in Palmetto Commerce Park.

S&ME’s work for the enormous Boeing 787 Dreamliner project began in 2004 for construction of the aft and mid-body fuselage plants, when it developed cost-effective methods for overcoming poor soil conditions at the site caused by phosphate mining in the early 20th century. For this initial site work S&ME was awarded South Carolina’s top Engineering Excellence Award (EEA), the Palmetto Award, from the state’s chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies.

S&ME has operated a major branch in Charleston for 32 years. The firm employs more than a thousand employees in 26 locations in the Southeast and Midwest. It is currently ranked 97th on Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine’s Top 500 Design Firms list.
