S&ME is an award winning engineering and environmental services firm employing 1,000 professional and support staff working from 28 offices in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The firm is annually ranked in Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine’s Top 500 Design Firms and Top 200 Environmental Firms. We have won more than 70 Engineering Excellence Awards from state chapters of the American Council of Engineering Companies.

Soils & Materials Engineering (now just S&ME) was founded in 1973 in Raleigh, North Carolina and remains headquartered there. In March 2010, we expanded significantly by acquiring the assets and hiring most employees of QORE Property Sciences. Our major service areas are a strong combination, satisfying most construction site and regulatory compliance needs. Expertise includes:

Geotechnical Engineering
Our geotechnical services involve the investigation and evaluation of subsurface conditions of a site in relation to its intended use. S&ME’s services are generally provided using in-house field exploration capabilities and in-house accredited laboratory testing facilities.

Environmental Engineering
From our deep experience, S&ME can assist its clients to address environmental issues and regulatory compliance. We can also assist you in public education for citizens groups and negotiations with government agencies. We’ll listen to you, learn from you, evaluate the regulatory and risk management issues, and develop an approach aimed at your achieving your objectives. Services include:

Occupational Health and Safety
With exceptional experience and resources, S&ME offers one of the largest occupational health and safety (OHS) operations in the Southeast. Staff have extensive knowledge in workplace assessments and hazardous materials management. S&ME’s Certified Industrial Hygienists, professionals and technicians provide basic consultations, high-tech surveys, investigations, assessments, program development, employee training, and remediation design for industrial, manufacturing, commercial, institutional, healthcare, and governmental clients. Construction Materials Engineering and Testing
S&ME’s range of materials engineering and construction testing and observation services make use of AASHTO accredited laboratories and field-testing performed by certified technicians. Our services involve the testing and observation of virtually all types of construction materials and the review of the construction techniques and procedures necessary to incorporate the proper materials into the project.

Water Resources and Solid Waste Engineering
Water resources projects can vary from a headwater tributary to an entire watershed. S&ME’s engineers, hydrologists, fluvial geomorphologists and information management specialists work with our geotechnical engineering, natural resources, materials, and other specialists to provide comprehensive services to meet project scopes.

Natural Resources and Cultural Resources
