History
S&ME, INC. HISTORY
Soil & Material Engineers (now S&ME) was formed in 1973 in Raleigh, NC to provide geotechnical/construction materials engineering services. Support services included soil test drilling and laboratory and field construction material testing. (Founders were Glenn Futrell and Bob Owens.)
From 1973 to 1983 S&ME experienced profitable, rapid growth through geographic expansion and market penetration. By 1983, S&ME had 500 employees in 15 offices within 6 southeastern states. Services remained the same. Revenue was approximately $25 million.
From 1983 to 1987, S&ME shifted its growth strategy to diversification of services. Environmental assessment, engineering and remediation was developed. Aerial photogrammetry and water resource well drilling were added through acquisitions. Seven additional offices were added increasing employment to 1000 and revenues to $50 million.
In late 1987, Westinghouse Electric purchased 100% of S&ME and attempted to “spring board” broad-based environmental consulting and remediation off of S&ME. In 1992, Westinghouse decided to exit parts of the environmental consulting business which resulted in the sale of portions of the original S&ME businesses back to the current S&ME employees.
Presently S&ME:
- Is employee owned
- Employs 1,000 professionals, administrative and field-operations personnel
- Maintains 28 offices in AL, FL, GA, KY, NC, SC, TN and VA
