Charleston, SC-The 2007 Palmetto Award, the top award given by the American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina (ACEC-SC), has been won by the Charleston Branch of S&ME, Inc. The award was presented at the annual awards banquet in Columbia on February 8. The project was also recently named a national ACEC finalist.

The competitions are sponsored annually by state chapters of (ACEC) to “celebrate engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of merit and ingenuity.”

This year’s award is for S&ME’s geotechnical engineering work on Vought/Global Aeronautica’s 700,000 square-foot facilities in North Charleston. The plant is used to build fuselage sections of Boeing Aircraft’s revolutionary new 787 Dreamliner passenger jet. The site is adjacent to Charleston International Airport, from which the fuselage sections are flown aboard a modified 747 to Boeing’s main facility near Seattle.

Dan Holley, the project manager for S&ME, said “We are certainly proud to have been a member of the team that designed and built this challenging facility. We hope this project leads to further aerospace industry development for the Charleston area.”

The S&ME Charleston branch also won the 2002 Palmetto award for its design of the pile load-test program for the Arthur Ravenel Jr. bridge over the Cooper River. S&ME is an 800 member firm with offices in seven Southeastern states. The Charleston branch opened in 1980.
