Released, 6/15/05

Wilmington, NC – The Wilmington branch of S&ME announces the appointment of Philip M. Byrd as geotechnical department manager.

S&ME is an award-winning engineering and environmental firm that has operated a Wilmington branch since 1977.

Byrd is transferring from S&ME’s Raleigh branch where he has been a staff professional for the last four years. He has managed numerous pre-construction geotechnical explorations as well as construction materials projects, including major roadways, bridges and airports.

The new manager holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering from North Carolina State University and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Institute of Transportation Engineers.

Byrd will coordinate and manage geotechnical explorations for S&ME-Wilmington projects in eastern North Carolina. He succeeds Michael Behen who will assume the responsibilities of senior reviewer and senior engineer for S&ME’s Wilmington operations.

Branch Manager Randy Martin said the addition of Byrd significantly expands S&ME’s geotechnical capabilities in eastern North Carolina. “We’re excited to have Philip join with Mike and the rest of our team in Wilmington,” Martin said. S&ME employs 650 professional and support staff in 18 locations in North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Tennessee, and is ranked in Engineering News-Record magazines national Top 100 Pure Design Firms.
