S&ME scholarships go to ten students
For release 9/30/05

Raleigh, NC – Ten students from six S&ME offices have been awarded $1,500 scholarships in the firm’s ninth annual Lawrence R. Matthews Scholarship Program.

The scholarship program is open to the children of the firm’s 700 employees located in six southeastern states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. It was established in honor of Lawrence R. Matthews, who served as S&ME president from 1992-1997.

This year’s winners are:

Naureen S. Akhtar of Cary, NC is a 2005 graduate of Green Hope High School. Akhtar is a freshman at North Carolina State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering. Her father, Kamrul Razaque, is an engineer with S&ME’s Raleigh branch.

Andrea Juliani of Garner, NC is a four-time recipient of the scholarship. Juliani is a senior at Appalachian State University and will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry this December. Her father, Ron Juliani, is the assistant radiation safety officer and oversees quality assurance with S&ME.

Robert S. Hancock (not pictured) of Greensboro, NC is a 2005 graduate of Western Guilford High School. Hancock is a freshman at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville majoring in business administration. His father, Scott Hancock, is the geotechnical services manager at S&ME’s Greensboro branch.

John T. Marcus of Greenville, SC is a 2005 graduate of Wade Hampton High School. He is a freshman in the honors program at The Citadel in Charleston, SC. His father, J. Mike Marcus, is an environmental scientist with S&ME’s Spartanburg branch.

Brittany N. Musselwhite of Mt. Pleasant, SC is a 2005 graduate of Wando High School. She is now a freshman at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC. Her mother, Angela Musselwhite, is geotechnical services manager at S&ME’s Charleston branch.

Carolyn E. Quarles of Rock Hill, SC is a junior at Winthrop University pursuing a degree in chemistry. Quarles is a second time recipient of the scholarship. Her father, Al Quarles, is a senior hydrogeologist at S&ME’s Charlotte branch.

Katherine A. Weatherford of Greer, SC is a junior at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC pursing a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Her father, Joe Weatherford, is employed in Spartanburg as a regional safety coordinator by the S&ME Corporate Headquarters.

Alicia D. Williams of Charleston, SC is a sophomore at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing. Williams is a second-time recipient of the scholarship. Her father, Melvin Williams, is construction services manager at S&ME’s Charleston branch.

LaToya M. Miller (not pictured) of Austell, GA is a 2005 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School and is now a freshman at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, GA. Her father, Barry D. Miller is a senior engineering technician at S&ME’s Atlanta branch.

Eric A. Williams, of Kingsport, TN, is a May 2005 graduate of Northeast State Technical Community College in Blountville, TN. A second-time recipient of the scholarship, Williams will be continuing his studies at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in math education. His father, P. Alan Williams, is the environmental services manager at S&ME’s Tri-Cities branch.
