S&ME awards scholarships to eleven students
Raleigh, NC - Eleven children of employees from seven S&ME, Inc. offices have won scholarships in the annual Lawrence R. Matthews Scholarship Program.
Children of employees may apply for the scholarships for use at colleges and universities. Candidates are selected for awards based on criteria that include academic achievement and effort, school and community participation, leadership qualities and honors achieved.
S&ME established the program, now in its tenth year, to honor Lawrence R. Matthews, S&ME’s president from 1992-1997. Matthews and his wife Rose, have contributed to the scholarship fund annually.
This year’s winners (listed below) have all excelled academically while being active in their respective communities:
Christopher Chambers of Charlotte, NC is a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill pursuing a degree in Applied Mathematics and Science and a second-time scholarship recipient. He is a member of the Residence Hall Association, which plans and funds events for the student community and an intramural sports captain. Chamber’s mother Kathleen is a marketing coordinator in the firm’s Charlotte, NC branch.
Emily Heyman of Charlotte NC is a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, a member of the Women’s Ensemble Choir and the university swim team. Heyman’s father John is a business developer in the Charlotte, NC branch.
Alexa Kowalski is a sophomore at the Carolinas College of Health Sciences in Charlotte, NC majoring in Pre-Nursing. She is a second-time scholarship recipient. Kowalski is very active in community events, chairing a local food drive and working on other fund raising efforts like tsunami relief. Her father, Victor Kowalski, is a technician in the Charlotte, NC branch.
Casey Lowe of Greensboro, NC is a freshman at Saint Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, SC. For the past two years, she has volunteered for Horsepower, a non profit organization that provides therapeutic equine activities for the disabled. She plans to major in pre-veterinary studies and therapeutic horsemanship. Lowe’s father, Ed Henriques, is the environmental department manager in the Greensboro, NC branch.
Brittany Musselwhite of Mt. Pleasant, SC is a junior at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC. She is also a second-time scholarship recipient. Musselwhite is an officer in Gamma Phi Beta sorority, and volunteers her time to many local organizations like the Myrtle Beach Humane Society. Her mother Angela is engineering manager in the Charleston, SC branch.
Nathan Rainwater is a senior at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is actively involved in volunteering at local schools though the national organization Young Life. He has also achieved the Dean’s list for the past six semesters. Rainwater’s father Randy is a materials engineer with the Knoxville, TN branch.
Harrison Riggs is a freshman at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. At Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, NC, Riggs was varsity soccer captain and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. His father Abner (Buddy) Riggs is senior geotechnical engineer in the Raleigh, NC branch.
Nicole Sirna is a freshman at Pellissippi State Technical Community College in Knoxville, TN. In her high school career she was a member of the marching band and volunteered for the Relay for Life. Her mother, Denise Lewis is the Knoxville, TN branch administrator.
Ashley Swoap of Simpsonville, SC, is a sophomore at Clemson University in Clemson, SC pursuing a degree in Communications Studies. She is sports layout editor for the Clemson University newspaper staff, active in intramural softball and achieved the President’s List this past spring. Her father, David Swoap, is the geotechnical department manager in Spartanburg, SC.
Katherine Weatherford is a senior at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC, pursing a bachelor’s degree in business administration. A third-time scholarship recipient, Weatherford has been active in state and national political campaigns and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Her father, Joe Weatherford, is the safety coordinator for Region 2 and is located in the Spartanburg, SC office.
Eric Williams is a senior at East Tennessee State University in Johnston City, TN. A four-time recipient of the scholarship, Williams is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in math education. Besides his studies, Williams participates in intramural sports, teaches Sunday school at a local church and volunteers for local charities. His father, Alan Williams, is the environmental services manager and senior engineer in Tri-Cities, TN.
S&ME, founded in 1973, operates 22 branches in the Southeast. The firm has won 60 Engineering Excellence Awards from state chapters of the American Council of Engineering Companies and is ranked in the Top 100 Pure Design Firms by Engineering-News Record magazine.
