Former Virginia Geotechnical Services begins
using S&ME name

Richmond, VA –Virginia Geotechnical Services (VGS), which has for the past year been operating as a division of southeastern regional firm S&ME, Inc., will formally begin using the sole name S&ME this month.

When S&ME acquired VGS last year, it became S&ME’s 21st office. Because of VGS’ longstanding reputation in Virginia, having been founded by Ann M. Samford, P.E., P.G. in 1987, the office continued to operate under that name as a division of S&ME.

Earlier this year, the VGS division won the Outstanding Local Civil Engineering Achievement Award in a competition held by the Richmond chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The award was for VGS’ design of innovative approaches to manage contamination at the site of the Village of Rockets Landing, a commercial and residential development project at a long-neglected site along the James River in Richmond. The design used new construction as the primary barrier to protect humans against exposure to contaminants

Among other prominent projects, VGS played a key role in the geotechnical design of foundations for bridges and ramps at the I-95/U.S. 1 interchange, west of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge crossing the Potomac River between Virginia and Maryland.

To observe the name change to S&ME, the branch will hold an open house for clients and associates on Tuesday, September 25 at 4:00 to 7:00 p.m..

S&ME was established in 1973. The firm has won 60 Engineering Excellence awards and is included in Engineering News-Record magazines top 100 “Pure Design” firms. Other S&ME offices are in North and South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee.
